Ice, wind, tornado threats highlight holiday season

Last week provided a little bit of everything: ice, rain, wind, frigid
temperatures, springlike temperatures, and Christmas.
Tuesday, Dec. 23, motorists found themselves in a slick situation on Highway
61 and in town. A 'wintry mix' began taking its toll at around 11 a.m.,
leaving city streets and parking lots dangerously slick. Visually, the
situation wasn't dramatic. There were no icicles dangling from eaves ­ no
ice-encased tree limbs. But anyone trying to walk or drive soon found out:
it was treacherous.
Motorists in local parking lots locked up their breaks, gliding over the
thin coating of ice. Pedestrians opted to skate to their destinations,
